Etymology

Pythingdean [petiŋdiˑn] probably gave name to Stephen de Pytingdene (1279Ass ), perhaps also to John de Puddyngdene (ib.). This may contain the same pers. name Pytta that we have in the not very distant Petworth, v. supra 114. 'Pytta 's valley,' v. ing , denu .
