Etymology

Probably' Pæcga 's homestead,' v. ham . The affinities of such a name are obscure, though it would seem that we have a strong form allied to it in Pegswood (PN NbDu s. n .). Replacing of [dʒ] by [g] may arise from such forms as Pag (e )nham , in which positions g often became a stop-sound; cf. on this point Padgham infra 470, 520. A similar development is found in Paganhill (Gl), Pagenhull 1292 Ipm, which must contain the same pers. name.
