v. niwe , timber . There are few if any trees here now, but there is evidence that the district was once well timbered.On the Ni - forms here and elsewhere in Sussex, v. Ekwall, Anglia Beiblatt 28, 295, and Chadwick, Studies in Old English 41.Cf. also Niton (Wt), DB Neeton , 1316–1428 FA Nywe (n )ton .For a similar name cf. Nyetimber and Newtimber infra 175, 286 and Newtimber in Warblington (Ha), DBNeutibrige (sic).
