Etymology

This is a difficult name. There is evidence for a stream name Loxa (RN 267) but it does not seem likely that we have it here in a genitival compound. The only other possible suggestion is that we have OE  lox , 'lynx,' used here in the form Loxa as a pers. name, hence 'Loxa's clearing,' v. leah , but no certainty is possible. Cf.
