Historical Forms

  • Hegwode, Heywode, Heghwode 1271,1279 Ass 1340 NI

Etymology

Highwoods Barn (6″) probably takes its name from the family of Hegwode , Heywode , Heghwode (1271, 1279Ass , 1340 NI), or the family may derive from the place-name, the s being pseudo- manorial. If the name is local it must be 'enclosure-wood,' v. (ge )-hæg , and not really 'high' wood.
