Harley Road

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hollington

Historical Forms

  • Harelegh 1483 Add

Etymology

Harley Road (6″) may mark the site of the place called Harelegh in 1483 (Add ). The road now divides the parishes of Hastings and Hollington, but this is a modern boundary, so the meaning of the first element must remain uncertain. It may be 'hare- clearing,' v. hara , leah . This steep road was until recently known as Harley Shute (J.E.R.).
