Minnis Rock

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hastings

Historical Forms

  • le Menewes 1500 HMC13
  • Mynnis 1657 SAC12,196

Etymology

Minnis Rock (6″). The first element in this name appears as le Menewes in 1500 (HMC 13, App. iv) and Mynnis in 1657 (SAC 12, 196). It may be suggested that the menewes form is an error of transcription for Menennes and that we have here an example of the ME  menesse , OE  gemænnes , discussed infra 560.
