Etymology

There is no ford across the Arun here now and it has been suggested (SxNQ 1, 226) that the ford was really over Binsted Brook but numerous early forms show that we really have to do with more than one ford. There can be little doubt that at an earlier stage in the history of the Arun it was fordable at this point. The two fords may have been both over the Arun, or one may have been over the Arun and the other over the tributary brook.
