Etymology

Smoles Fm (not on map) is le Smole in 1379 (Ct ), Smole in 1435 (Ct ), and was the home of William atte Smole (1326Ct , 1327, 1332 SR). Professor Ekwall suggests that we have here an OF smol (e ), cognate with OSw smula , Norw  smola , 'crumb,' Norw  smol , 'small piece,' Ger schmollen , 'the soft part of bread.' For such a word in p.n.s, cf. Crumbles supra 428 and lez Crommes , i.e. 'the crumbs' in Beckley (1498 Ipm).
