Etymology

There can be little doubt that the etymology suggested for this name by Bradley (EHR 30, 164) is the correct one. He took it to be from OE  hār -hūn dell , 'hoarhound-valley,' a suggestion confirmed by the profusion of the plant in the neighbourhood. The h would almost inevitably be lost in the name of a great Norman stronghold. For the relation of the name to that of the Arun river, v. supra 3.
