Historical Forms

  • atte Wrythe 1555 Ct

Etymology

Reeth Copse (6″) and Reeth Wood (Fernhurst) are on the lands called Reeve or Rithe in 1787 (SAC 39, 183). It probably gave name to William atte Wrythe (1359Ass ) and Thomas atte Wrythe (1555Ct ). If that is the case the word is OE  wriþ, 'thicket.' Cf. Wrythe in Carshalton (Sr), 1450 Surrey Rec. Soc. 6 le Ryth , unless this last is an inverted spelling, riþ being the original form.
