Etymology

Amberley Wildbrooks is le Wildebrok (e ) Wildebrok (e ), a. 1370 SRS 31, 44, 1374Ct . brook is used in the Sx sense of marshy meadow land, while wild must have the meaning of uncultivated or waste land, cf. Wellen's infra 184. Similarly we have (near Hamsey) pratum voc. Wildebroc (Lewes 119), Wildecumbe 12thAD and Wyldelond 13thLewes , Wyldmersshe 1527 SAC 45, all in this county, and Wildmarsh in Tottenham (Mx), Wildemers 12th BM and Wild Moor in Cannington (So), Wyldemer 1301 Ipm.
