Etymology

In Longbridge Hundred. There was also a Pig Firle (site unknown), mentioned as Pyggeferl (1300 SAC 43, 194), Pigferle (1315Ass ) and the home of Richard Piggefirl (1287CplM ), Gervas de Pygeferle or Piggeferles (SR 1327–1332). One can only suggest that these Firles (v. West Firle supra 359) were distinguished by the abundance of the creatures in question.
