Etymology

Ribsden is Wipsedone 675 (13th) BCS 34, Ripsedowne 1446 Chertsey, Rippsdown 1595 SAC i, Ribsdon Hill 1607Norden .Ribs Down Hill 1749 B. In view of the later and modern forms it is clear that the initial w of the charter form is an error for r .If so, the first element must be the OE  *rispe or ripse discussed in PN Sx s. n. Ripsley and assumed to have had the meaning 'branches, twigs, briars, etc.' Hence 'hill overgrown with shrubs or briars,' v. dun . Cf. Ripsley (PN Sx 45), Reston (We), Rispeton 1271, 1273, Respeton 1309 Ipm, The Rips (infra 310) and Ripsette (1369 Chertsey) containing a derivative of the type noted infra 359.
