Etymology

Basing Stone (lost) is Besauntstone 1446 Chertsey, Basing Stone 1607Norden , 1749 B, 1820 SRS xxxii. The stone stood beside the Winchester road near the Jolly Farmer Inn (called Golden Farmer 1729 Senex). The earliest form looks as if it were to be connected with ME  besa (u )nt , the name of a gold coin then current, and used in heraldry of a gold roundel. Later the name was apparently associated with the Basing family who held part of the manor of Bagshot.
