Etymology

Postford Ho and Mill is Possedeford 1241Ass , 1332 SR (both p), 1398Ct , Postfordebrigge 1515Ct , Postford al. Possedford 1647Rental . The forms are too late for any certainty.A possible solution is as follows: Ekwall adduces good evidence (PN in -ing 38) for a personal name *Pos (s )a , found also in Possingworth (PN Sx 407). There may have been an -ede derivative of this name, cf. Monnede , Luhhede , Lullede , Ucede (Redin 161–2) and Wipped . Hence 'Possede 's ford.'
