Historical Forms

  • Crichmore 1757 HaslemereParReg
  • Crutchmore 1839 TA

Etymology

Critchmere (6″) is Crouchmore 1647MinAcct , Crichmore 1757 Haslemere ParReg, Crutchmore 1839TA . The second element is 'moor' (v. mor ), the recent substitution of mere being due to the association of the name with the modern artificial trout pools here. The earliest spelling is very late, but may point to ME  crouche , 'cross,' as the first element. A John ate Cruche was taxed under Churt, which then included Pitfold, in 1332 (SR).
