Tenningshook Wood is Tillingshokes 1336Ct , Tyllyngeshokes t. Hy 5Ct , Tellyngeshokes 1474Ct , Tillinghooke copisch 1550 Pat, Tillings hooke gate 1625Ct , Tiltinghook c. 1650Add . The modern form is clearly corrupt. The name is probably of late medieval origin, since a Thomas Tylling ' appears in the parish in 1332 (SR). hook (v. hoc ) refers to the spur of land here above Tillingbourne valley.
