Etymology

Ryde Fm is Ryde 1541 LP, 1579ParReg (West Clandon), Ride Farm 1711 VCH iii, 366 and was the home of Thomas at Ride (1524SR ) and John Attryde (1588 Moulton). This may be OE  riþ, 'streamlet,' referring to the little brook just to the west of the farm, but v. infra 365. In 1599 (SrWills) there is mention of Henry at Ryde of Send, called in the same will Henry Ryder , a curiously late example of the type of surname noted under Bridge End supra 143.
