Etymology

Cotts Wood is Coteswode 1403 Cl, Cottyswoode 1544 LP. Near by must have been Cottesers , Coteshers t. Hy 3 AD iii, Cottes - (s )hers (s )he 1280 Ipm, t. Hy 8MinAcct . The first element would seem therefore to be a pers. name, as in Cottesbrooke (PN Nth 67), the strong form of OE  Cotta , v. ersc .
