Palewell Common

Early-attested site in the Parish of Mortlake

Etymology

Palewell Common (6″) is so named in 1802 (WimbCt). In 1560 there is mention of 'a certain common field there called the Pale' in which tenants were forbidden to put or keep cattle. The 'place called the Pale' is again mentioned in a court roll of 1567.We probably have here pale in the sense of 'enclosed place,' or 'area enclosed by a fence' (NED s. v .).
