Etymology

Netherne Fm is la Nedre 1281 FF (p), la Neddre 1287 M and B (p), lez Nedder 1522 SAC xx, Neddar 1620, 1626 ParReg, Neddar otherwise Netherne 1809 M and B, Nethern 1816 O.S. This name has a parallel in the lost le Neddren in Alfold (1410Ct ). It may be suggested that both names alike preserve an unrecorded OE  compound nīed -ærn , corresponding to the recorded nīed -hūs , 'domus necessaria.' For loss of final n in many of the forms cf. Ekwall Studies 64 ff.
