Etymology

'Farm by the dike or ditch,' v. dic , tun . Cf. Ditton (K), dictune BCS 1321. Long to distinguish it from Thames Ditton infra 90. “So called from its Length, it being near a Mile from one End to the other” (Aubrey i, 242).
