Etymology

Herne Hill does not appear on maps before 1789 (L and C), but the name may be old and identical with le Herne , a field- name found in Brixton just by, t. Hy 7 (Rental ), v. hyrne .Herne Hill (K) is Harenhull in 1247 (Ch) and is clearly of different origin.
