Etymology

Mountain Wood is to be associated with Walter atte Mountaygne (1325Ass ), ate Montayne (1332 SR), atte Mounteyn (1342Ass ).This is clearly ME  mo (u )ntaine , from OFr  montagne , the wood lying high up on the North Downs. The only other example of this word previously noted in place-names is Mountain Fm (PN D 591).
