Etymology

The Nower is Norehacche 1395, tenement atte Nore 1448, Nower meade , Nowerfeld 1587, Nower Barne 1597Norfolk , Nower-hill 1719 Aubrey, and was the home of Osbert del Ore (1247 FF).'At the slope or bank,' v. Nower Wood supra 77. The Nower is a steep hill immediately to the south-west of Dorking.
