Etymology

Rutwick (lost) is Rucwyk 1263, 1294AddCh (p), Ruk (e )wyk 1279, 1294Ass , Rokwyk 1356 FF, Rokewykhacche 1523Onslow , Rutwikehacche 1527 ib., Rutwicke Farm 1578Deed . This name is probably a compound of OE  ruh, 'rough,' and wic . For OE h becoming k , cf. PN Sx Part I, p. xxix, and Haxted infra 329.For k > t , cf. Rothamsted (Herts), earlier Rokehampsted .
