Etymology

The first element is probably a pers. name Ceabba , which may be inferred from ceabban dene (KCD 752) and ceabban sol (BCS 282) and Choppington (PN NbDu 46). Such a pers. name would be a regular pet-form of the recorded Cædbæd or Cædbeald (cf. Cedboldeswyl BCS 963). The same man must have given his name to the field in Chobham called Chabeworth (1463Chertsey ).
