Etymology

Chessington Court was so named by Mr Hamilton c. 1800 (VCH iii, 264). The estate was earlier known as Fream (maner of Friern 1535 VE, Freren 1547 LP, Frerne al. Freren 1728Recov ), representing the possessions held by the Abbot of Boxley, Kent, in the parish since 1189 (VCH iii, 264). Cf. Freme Fm in Tolleshunt (Ess) with a similar history.
