Etymology

Wattlehurst is Wadeleshurst 1281, 1381, Wadelesherst 1448Norfolk , Wadelehurst 1332 SR (p), 1370 FF (p), Wadleshurst 1395, Watelherst 1559Norfolk , Wadlehurst 1719 Aubrey. In the 1281 Court Roll there is mention of a Nicholas Wadel or le Wadel , and it is to be assumed that the hyrst took its name from him or from one of his ancestors. The personal name Wadel (l ) occurs also in Devon, where one Wadell ' held the manor of Wadelescota in DB (v. PN D 188, s. n. Waddlestone).
