Champion Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Camberwell

Etymology

Champion Hill is so named in 1823 (Br). This, with Champion Park, Champion Grove and Champion Lodge (now demolished), takes its name from the family of Philip Champion de Crespigny who died here in 1765. The family had been settled in Camberwell since t. Wm 3 (VCH iv, 26).
