Etymology

Painshill Fm (formerly Dunhurst) is Danhurst 1235 FF (p), 1298Ass , 1307 Ch, 1332 Ipm, 1682FF , Danherst 1409 IpmR, Denherst 1255Ass , 1409 IpmR, Dunhurst 1749 B, 1765 R, Painshill 1789 L and C. This is probably a compound of denn and hyrst . For a , v. Introd. xxiii. The present name is to be associated with the family of Richard Payn (1332 SR). The maps show the sites to be identical.
