Etymology

Heyes (lost) is hyse 1062 (c. 1250) KCD 813, Hese 1134Westm , 1268, 1277, 1356, 1456WAM , Hesefeld 1456 ib., Hesewall 1474 ib., Heyesfild 1574 Battersea. 'Brushwood,' v. hese . The earliest occurrence of the name is in the land boundaries of Lambeth (v. infra 22) and the site must have been somewhere near the present Nine Elms.
