Etymology

Newlands Ho (6″) and Newlands Corner are Newlond 1497, Newland (e )1515, 1523Ct , Newlands Corner 1749 B, 1765 R. The name was probably applied at first to a part of the downland taken into cultivation. The famous 'Corner' marks the spot where the main road over the Downs crosses an ancient way.
