Etymology

'Dark lake', v. blæc , mere . The earlier references are to the medieval residence of the Talbot family, which was on the S. side of the lake, and the GR given above is for this site. There is an account of the house in the Introduction to Talbot. It ceased to be habitable between 1538 and 1561, and there is now only a mound.
