Historical Forms

  • Blackhurst Ford 1561 Garbet 1795,7 RTH 1833 OS

Etymology

Blackhurstford Bridge (on parish boundary, by Blackhurst Fm in Bettisfield, Fli): Blackhurst Ford 1561 Garbet, 1795, 7 RTH, 1833 OS.Garbet also gives Blackford Brook from his 1561 source, and says that Black Waterford is on the W. boundary of Wem; and Blakeford Forde is given in PR(L) 9 as the residence of a woman buried at Wem in 1598. It is not clear whether these other names refer to Blackhurst Ford, or whether there was another crossing of R. Roden nearby.
