Etymology

A compound of brocc 'badger' and hyrst 'wooded hill', which occurs also in minor ns. in Ch, Db, Wa. The above references are to a wood in Wem. The settlement is Wem Brocaist 1748, Brockhorst 1750, Brockhurst 1758, all PR(L) 10. This settlement and a house called The Hill stand on an oval hill of 300', a classic hyrst site.
