Etymology
The village is a mile E. of Uppington. The area to which it is central forms a well-defined corner of Wellington parish, but is not a parish in its own right or a Domesday manor. It has been included in this study of ancient and modern administrative centres because it was a pre-Conquest estate of 3 hides, the subject of a royal charter dated A.D. 975. In the boundary survey of this the S.E. boundary is given as 'along the Wrekin'.
