Etymology

Drake Ley Heath (SJ 617244), Drakelowe 1376SBL 5433 , Drakeley Heath 1588CourtR , Drakeley Feild 1605ib , 1833 OS, 1839TA . 'Dragon tumulus', v. draca , hlāw . This recurrent compound, which is found also in Bd, Db, La, Wo, refers to the belief, recorded in OE poetry, that treasure in burial mounds was guarded by dragons. Several names in this area contain hlāw . Peplow, 'pebble tumulus', is a mile to the east, cf. also Blakeleyhill in Booley township.
