The Ditches
Early-attested site in the Parish of Rushbury
Historical Forms
- Wylleburi 13th VCHX368
- Wynbury Castle 16th ib
Etymology
The Ditches, 1833 OS. An earlier name for this hill-fort was Wylleburi 13th VCH X368, Wynbury Castle 16th ib. Eyton (iv, 144) gives a reference to ploughland “under Bileburie” : it seems likely that B - is mistranscribed for W -. v. byrig . The first element may be the personal name Willa : 'willows' seem unlikely at this high site.
