Coats (SO 526926) is Cotes 1200 Curet freq to 1327 Pat, Cot '1259 RH, Cota 1271–2Ass (p), La Cote 1331 BM, Coats 1833 OS, The Coates 1841–6TA . 'Cottages', with the ME -s plural of OE  cot(e). VCH X59 describes a 15th-cent. house which originally stood within a rectangular moat.
