Ape Dale

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rushbury

Historical Forms

  • Longefeldes Dale 1291–2,1305–6 Ass
  • Langfelde Dale c.1540 Leland

Etymology

This valley was earlier 'Longville's dale' (Longefeldes Dale 1291–2, 1305–6Ass , Langfelde Dale c.1540 Leland). The 1291–2 reference is to Acton ' in Longefeldes Dale , i.e. Acton Scott, which overlooks the S. end of the stream-valley. It is suggested supra , under Longville in the Dale, that *Langanfeld was a district-name which referred to the area between Wenlock Edge and the Church Stretton hills.
