Etymology

'Stile', OE  stigel. It has been suggested that this word sometimes means 'steep ascent' in place-names, but this would not be appropriate here. The name probably ceased to be meaningful before the end of the ME period, otherwise it would have become *Stile. The place is a township of Prees.
