Etymology

OE  *(ge)fall, which is considered to mean 'clearing'. The term is well represented in Ch, PN Ch 5.1173, sometimes, in Wirral, referring to turf mosses. 'Woodland clearing' seems appropriate in the present instance, as blocks of fields called Stocking and Ridding in TA adjoin the settlement.
