Etymology

Apparently another 'beech-tree settlement' from bēce and tūn the same name as Betton Abbots. The DB spelling Baitune and the 12th-cent. Beitona forms from SAC present a serious problem, however; there seems to be no parallel to this development from an OE  *Bēctūn .The objection to bæce 'stream-valley' as first element of Betton-in-Hales is the absence of a significant number of -a - spellings.
