Etymology

'Lake settlement', v. mere , tūn , identical with Marton in Chirbury, Part 1199–200. Instances in other counties have variant modern forms Marten, Martin, Merton. The whole corpus, numbering about 30, is discussed by Ann Cole in Journal 24, pp. 30–41.
