Etymology

The misleading modern form may be due to influence from the neighbouring Balderton. The c.1180 and 1195–6 spellings suggest a compound of tūn with a personal name in Ælf -, probably Ælfhere, which would be uninflected: v. the discussion of Balderton infra .
