Historical Forms

  • Elureton c.1180 SAS
  • Alverton 1195–6 Eyton
  • Alverton super Bylemars 1280–90 ib
  • Allerton 1279 Eyton 1495 Ipm
  • Alderton 1624 SBL3407

The misleading modern form may be due to influence from the neighbouring Balderton. The c.1180 and 1195–6 spellings suggest a compound of tūn with a personal name in Ælf -, probably Ælfhere, which would be uninflected: v. the discussion of Balderton infra .
