Etymology

Myddlewood (SJ 452239): Muddelwode m.13thSBL 6305 , Bosc of Mudle 1250–5 Eyton, Mudleswode 1291–2Ass , Muddleswode 1297 Strange, Mydle Wood 1604, 7 PR(L) 19, Middlewood 1811 PR(L) 10.'Wood belonging to Myddle'. Gough 33 gives an account of Myddle Wood Common and the tenements and cottages which were there in 1700. The settlement was probably made by squatters.
