Etymology

The name is applied to different places on 1833 OS and 1900 6″ maps. On 1833 OS it is shown at the road junction where the 6″ map marks a Methodist chapel. On 1900 6″ and on TAMap the name is shown ½ mile east of this, where there is a single house. The latter site is accorded the name on the 1961 1″ map and on the 1999 Explorer. On the Explorer map the road-junction houses have acquired the curious name Grumpy.
