Etymology
OE scypen, 'cattle-shed'. The Latin equivalent, Boveria , is used in HAC for an extensive farm which was set up here in 1204 (HAC 10-11). Both sheep and cattle were managed from this centre. Upper Shopen Fields in the 1789 ref. was a farmhouse higher up Cothercott Hill (VCH VIII133).
